College cross country championship, statewide high school all-stars this weekend

More than 20 colleges from throughout the south will converge on Holloway Park this weekend for the NCAA Division II South Regional Cross Country Championship, hosted by Florida Southern College and Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing.

The men’s 10K race will start at 7:30 a.m. The women’s 6K race will start at 8:45 a.m.

Schools included in the event include schools as near as Florida Southern, University of Tampa and Saint Leo University and as far away as the University of Puerto Rico at Bayamon and Union University from Jackson, Tennessee.

The event is open to the public.

Immediately following the NCAA event will be the 2018 Florida Athletic Coaches Association Cross Country All Star Classic. Local runners include Sophie Valenti from Lakeland High School and Brady Zimmerman from George Jenkins High School. The girls run at 9:15 a.m. while the boys run at 9:45 a.m.
