Selection Criteria
Bernie Little Sports Executive Award
The nominee, either personally or through their organization, has contributed
significantly to the betterment of Polk County through sports. Consideration
should be given to the visibility, economic and/or social contribution,
character development and overall enhancement of Polk County. (Lifetime Award)
Commissioner’s Award for Perseverance in Sports
The nominee for this award overcame extraordinary personal obstacles or
hardship while continuing to excel in sports in Polk County during the period of
June 2004-May 2005.
Professional Athlete of the Year
The nominee achieved outstanding success in sports on the professional level
in the time frame of June 2004-May 2005. Nominees must have been born and raised
in Polk County OR relocated to Polk County in their “formative years” (i.e. as a
youth, high school student or college student).
Male Amateur Athlete of the Year
The nominee achieved outstanding success in sports on the amateur level
(non-collegiate) in the time frame of June 2004-May 2005. Nominees must have
been born and raised in Polk County OR relocated to Polk County in their
“formative years”(i.e. as a youth, high school student, or college student).
Female Amateur Athlete of the Year
The nominee achieved outstanding success in sports on the amateur level
(non-collegiate) in the time frame of June 2004-May 2005. Nominees must have
been born and raised in Polk County OR relocated to Polk County in their
“formative years”(i.e. as a youth, high school student, or college student).
Male Collegiate Athlete of the Year
The nominee achieved outstanding success in sports on the collegiate level in
the time frame of June 2004-May 2005. Nominees must have been born and raised in
Polk County OR relocated to Polk County in their “formative years” (i.e. as a
youth, high school student college student).
Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year
The nominee achieved outstanding success in sports on the collegiate level in
the time frame of June 2004-May 2005. Nominees must have been born and raised in
Polk County OR relocated to Polk County in their “formative years” (i.e. as a
youth, high school student college student).
Male Team of the Year
The team nominated for this award represented Polk County with distinction at
the high school, collegiate, or professional levels during the time frame from
June 2004-May 2005. In addition to performance, the sportsmanship, character and
integrity of the team members are given careful consideration. To be eligible
for this award, the majority of team members must reside in Polk County.
Female Team of the Year
The team nominated for this award represented Polk County with distinction at
the high school, collegiate, or professional levels during the time frame from
June 2004-May 2005. In addition to performance, the sportsmanship, character and

Dick Goleno Award for Excellence in Journalism
Is an award given in honor of the award’s namesake. Dick was a passionate
sports journalist who through his character and professionalism significantly
contributed to Polk County’s sports industry and quality of life. Consideration
is given to knowledge of sports, accuracy of reporting, passion for sports and
concern for the community as a whole
